EDMONTON, AB, May 27, 2015 – The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) has chosen the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as a finalist for its 2015 Best of ITS Awards, in the category of best new innovative product, service or application.
The Wisconsin DOT (WisDOT)’s vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication project is one of four finalists vying for this prestigious award. The Best of ITS Award program, which honors projects in several categories, will announce the winners during the opening session at the 25th ITS America Annual Meeting and Exposition in Pittsburgh, Penn., on June 1.
“Drivewyze PreClear, our mobile-based weigh station bypass program, enables mobile devices such as smartphones and electronic logging devices to interact in real-time with Wisconsin’s existing weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems,” said Brian Heath, president of Drivewyze and Intelligent Imaging Systems. “This allows data from the WIM systems to be used in the bypass request process. This V2I communication greatly expands the footprint of the bypass program for the Wisconsin State Patrol without the deployment of roadside radio frequency identification (RFID) readers.”
Successful implementation required Drivewyze to accurately match data from the WIM system to the corresponding trucks whenever bypass requests were sent to the weigh station, according to Heath. Since September 2014, Wisconsin State Patrol, a division of WisDOT, has monitored about 7,000 trucks per month with on-board CMRS devices as they travel through four WIM-equipped sites. Drivewyze has successfully matched a high number of the WIM records to the corresponding trucks with 99.9 percent confidence in the accuracy of those matches.
“We congratulate WisDOT and the Wisconsin State Patrol for being chosen as a finalist for the Best of ITS Award and for its dedication in providing the latest technological tools to its vehicle enforcement officers,” Heath said. “These tools extend the ability of its officers to process more trucks and prevent more unsafe motor carriers from operating their equipment on our public highways.”
The highly competitive Best of ITS Awards recognize organizations whose projects have demonstrated specific and measureable outcomes and exemplified innovation by establishing a “new dimension” of performance.
